How it works

How to convert an image to STL

No CAD and no mesh repair. The file you download is the file you slice.

Original dog portrait01 / IMAGE

Upload

Any photo, picture, logo, drawing or screenshot. A clean background gives the best result.

Print

Download a watertight STL and open it in Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Cura or OrcaSlicer.

Image to STL

What is image to STL conversion?

It turns a flat picture into a 3D mesh saved as an STL, the file every 3D printing slicer reads. Brightness or outline becomes height, so the result is a solid you can print.

From a colored 3D model to a white PLA print, layer by layer. The STL holds the shape; your printer adds the layers.
  • Relief

Raises the picture into a height map on a flat base. Best for logos, badges, signs and line art.

  • Lithophane

Turns a photo into a thin panel that reveals the picture when a light shines through it.

    Open the tool
  • Silhouette

Cuts the subject out at one even thickness and keeps the holes. Good for cake toppers, stencils and outlines.

  • AI 3D model

Builds a full model with a back side from one photo, for figurines and props. Opening soon.

“The STL format is still often described as the de facto standard for 3D printing and rapid prototyping.”

Features

Why use this image to STL converter

Most AI 3D tools stop at a nice render. ImgToSTL gives you a file that slices cleanly.

Watertight by default

Closed, manifold meshes with outward normals. No holes for your slicer to flag.

Real sizes in millimeters

Set the longest side and that is what lands on the build plate.

Live 3D preview

See the model on a build plate while you drag the sliders, before anything is downloaded.

Your image stays on your device

Relief, lithophane and silhouette run in your browser. Your image is never uploaded, and the preview is free.

Opens in every slicer

Binary STL for Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Cura and OrcaSlicer.

Full 3D from a single photo

For things with a back side: figurines, busts, toys and props. AI generation opens soon.

FAQ

Image to STL questions

Answers about price, image types, common print problems and privacy.

Is ImgToSTL free?
Free to try. The 3D preview is free and needs no account. Each image to STL download costs 2 credits, and new accounts get 10 free credits (5 STLs), no card needed. File converters, viewers and Text to STL are free. AI 3D models will cost 25 to 35 credits each when they open.
How do I convert an image or picture to STL?
Upload a PNG, JPG or any other picture, choose Relief, Lithophane or Silhouette, set the size in millimeters and download the STL. Photo to STL takes seconds, and the file opens in any slicer.
Which image formats can I convert to STL?
PNG, JPG and WebP images up to 10 MB. For logos, a PNG with a transparent background works best, because transparent areas stay flat.
Which images work best?
For reliefs, high-contrast logos and line art. For lithophanes, well-lit photos with clear faces. For AI models, one object on a plain background, shot from the front.
What is the difference between a relief and an AI 3D model?
A relief is a raised surface built from the brightness of your image, with a flat back. An AI model is the whole object, sides and back included, so it prints as a figurine.
Will the STL print without repairs?
Relief and lithophane files are closed, manifold meshes with a flat bottom, so slicers accept them as they are.
Why is my STL just a flat slab?
The image has little contrast, so every pixel maps to about the same height. Raise the contrast first, or switch to Silhouette and move the cut-off until the shape appears.
Why does my lithophane look washed out?
The thickness range is too narrow, so every area lets through similar light. Use about 0.8 mm minimum and 3 mm maximum, and print in white PLA at 100% infill.
Why did the background print as a solid block?
Relief raises dark pixels, so a dark background rises too, and a JPG has no transparency to mark it as background. Use a PNG with a transparent background, lighten the background, or switch to Silhouette.
Do you keep my images?
Images you turn into a relief, lithophane or silhouette never leave your device. A download only sends a credit check to our server. Images you send for AI generation are used only to build your model.
Can I sell what I print?
Yes. Models you create are yours to print and sell. Please only upload images you have the right to use.
